FOUR BEARS, ND – In June 2008, Chairman Marcus D. Levings of the Three Affiliated Tribes and Governor John Hoeven of North Dakota entered into a State-Tribal Tax Agreement which was created to streamline the two-tax system into one, providing more economic certainty for oil companies, and was meant to enhance interest in oil and gas exploration for the Fort Berthold Reservation located in western North Dakota. The agreement signed in June 2008 is scheduled to expire in the summer 2010 – Chairman Levings and Governor Hoeven will sign an indefinite continuation of the agreement Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 3 p.m. in the TAT Business Council Chambers. Previously Chairman Levings stated, “Through this present agreement both the Tribe and the State are able to work together to provide more stability in the taxation of oil and gas in western North Dakota.” According to Levings, the revenue from this particular tax agreement has assisted with funding the improvement of the TAT Roads System, Health Care, and Law Enforcement. -END-
