Hall leaves Northern Star to attend culinary school

By Dorreen Yellow Bird, Press Secretary

Northern Star, a tribal business, is losing Skye Brook Hall, the cashier who has been with the business since it opened a year ago.  Hall will attend the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, Minneapolis, Minn. in February.  In the future Hall said “I would like to travel and see the world.”  So her stint with the culinary arts could be her ticket to make that dream come true.

Hall is the daughter of Nina Fox, a Mandaree school teacher.  She was raised by her mother and aunts, Connie and Georgia Fox, both work at the tribal headquarters.  Her father, Merval Hall, died when she was two years old.

Her Indian name is Holy Evergreen Woman and Juneberry Root given to her by her great grandmother Rose Crows Flies High.  Hall’s maternal grandparents are Thomas Fox and Germaine Drags Wolf Fox.  Her paternal grandparents are Merval Hall Sr. and Charlotte Kling.

Lawrence Baker, who sang for Hall, said he remembers her as an outstanding dancer-someone who shows pride in her dancing.

A going away meal was put together by the Northern Star staff  Rebecca Brady, director; Deb Chase, assistant director and Pam Williams cashier/inventory.  Williams replaces Hall.

The tribe opened Northern Star February 13, 2009, and after a year, it is doing very well, Brady said.  The store offers merchandize such as:  jewelry of several different styles; purses, wallets, candles, belts, scarves, TAT jackets, Pendleton coats, Native art work, clocks, western art, home decorations, school spirit items for all segments, quilts, Pendleton blankets, rugs and room-size rugs, place mats, mugs, Christian items and more.

They are open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Right now, Brady said they are closed Saturday’s because business has slow, but they open again on Saturday in February.  For information about the store, you can call 627-3199.
