City council positions open in New Town By Dorreen Yellow Bird, press secretary Elections for city council in New Town will be held June 8. To be a candidate, you must fill out a Petition/Certificate of Nomination by April 9 at 4 p.m. The applications are available at the auditor office in New Town. If you are running for a city officer position, you should be a qualified voter of the city and resident of the city for at least 9 months preceding the election. For the mayor position, the person must be a qualified voter within the city. The mayor’s position is a two-year term which fills an unexpired position. For councilmen, you must be a voter and resident within the ward. There are two 4-year terms open and one 2-year unexpired position open for councilmen. You must not have been convicted of malfeasance, bribery or other corrupt practices or crimes. Any person living in the city who receives water and sewer service is eligible to vote. The exception is the people who live on Dakota Drive. They are eligible even though some do not have sewer or water service. If you have any questions or aren’t sure if you are eligible to run for office or to vote in New Town for the city council, you can call the city auditor at 627-4812. |
