Remains buried by Preservation Office

By Dorreen Yellow Bird, Press Secretary

Perry Brady, preservation office for the tribe, buried ancient remains near the earth lodges west of the tribal office.  The 125 specimen, both Hidatsa and Mandan, were found near the town of Lost woods near Stanley, North Dakota by SWCA Environmental Consultants.  The specimen included not only human but bone tools, mammals, birds, turtles and more.

On April 3, they were notified by the North Dakota Historical Society of the March 29th discovery.  This office is responsible for taking care of this for the tribe, said Brady.

“I called Judy Coffee to help with the burial because it is the female who does the spirit feeding.  The female is a vital part of burial and has been since the beginning of time.

Spirit food was prepared and provided after the remains were laid to rest.

As part of this ceremony, they brought in young people to learn how to do this, Brady said.  They will one day have to take over.  The monitors, as they call them, are young men and women from the community.

At this ceremony, the monitors were: Terae Two Crow, Sheldon Knight, Ferron Knight and Mitchell Fox.  Their supervisor was Casey Fox who attended also.
