Tribal Business Council of TAT
Special Meeting held on May 29, 2001

Tribal Business Council Approves Tribal Business Council Resolution #01-126-MWJR proposing increase to nine (9) TBC Members
...The Tribal Business Council has determined that, as the elected governing body of the Three Affiliated Tribes, it could provide more representation of and improved services to the membership of the Tribes through an increase in the membership of the Council from seven (7) to nine (9) members, which increase would be realized by providing for the election of the positions of Council Secretary and Treasurer at large by all eligible Tribal voters; and
...That the Tribal Business Council hereby directs the Legal Department of the Three Affiliated Tries to draft the actual language of the proposed Constitutional amendments...a prospective resolution wherein, additionally, the Secretary of the Interior would be requested to call and conduct a Secretarial Election on the proposed amendments.
Tribal Elders submit Petitions to the Tribal Business Council
Delores Sand and Viola Schettler presented petitions to be acted on by the Tribal Business Council.
…"We the undersigned, Elder members of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Tribes, hereby petition the Three Affiliated Tribal Council to honor our requests as follows:

  1. We would like the elderly money on a monthly basis with a voucher or purchase order system to be used for clothing, groceries, utility bills, rent and medical expenses. By this system, all elderly members would benefit equally from what the funds were intended, was we are not satisfied with the present budget.
  2. We are requesting the Elders Organization Board and staff be stopped from using our funds by creating such high paying jobs that do not benefit all of the elders. We feel the majority of the money is being used on administration and the majority of the elderly are left out, both on and off the reservation. Also, these jobs are overlapping services with other programs on the reservation.
  3. We request the Three Affiliated Tribal Council to re-evaluate the charter creating the Elders Organization, Resolution #00-125, as too much authority has been given to 13 people and all the elders of the Ft. Berthold Indian Reservation's voices are not being heard. An Immediate response to our petition is requested.
The TBC recognized and accepted the petitions for review.
