On
October 26, 2000 the Tribal Business Council approved
the request for Funding of a Animal Control Position
for the Three Affiliated Tribes.
This position would be budgeted for $10.00 per
hour with benefits and have the necessary equipment
and vehicle to control the pet population within
the six (6) segment of the Fort Berthold Reservation.
The Communities are have requested the control
of the dogs in the event that they may become
a public nuisance and a danger if they intentionally
bite and injure children as well as adults.
The Tribe will prepare the job description and
place the Animal Control Employee under the supervision
of the BIA Law Enforcement in order to ensure
that all required humane laws are followed
The position is a long time coming however, the
Tribal Council has had a few dog bites during
the present and past Tribal Elections so we know
first hand who dogs can get out of control.
A number of the unwanted dogs are abandoned in
or around a Housing projects and then left to
fend for themselves and end up nobody's dog but
living within the community. Adopted by some tenants
who feel sorry for the animals.
Another area of concern is if the owners of dogs
do not get their dogs spayed or neutered there
begins to be quite of few dogs without any leash
or tags running loose that is only going
to cause children to be bit. So we as a council
are trying to correct the problem presented to
us.
Tribe
Approves Student Loan Repayment Program
During
the October 26, 2000 Tribal Business Council
Meeting the Tribe Approved Student Loan Repayment
program that would enable those who took students
loans out during the school Term of 1997, 1998
and 1999 to be eligible for reimbursement of some
of the their outstanding debt incurred to received
their education.
The Tribal Education Department will be in charge
of the newly developed program, the JTAC Dollars
will be used to assist those who were not able
to take out a education grant from the tribe or
other sources due to being over income or under
funded, therefore they were forced to take Student
Loans to further their education. However if the
JTAC Plan would have been passed prior to 1997
there would have been no need to apply for any
Guaranteed Student loans. For more information,
please call Martha Hunter at 627-4112.
