Lead Woman "MIA A DU GOSH"
Senator Elect Heidi Heitkamp Receives Indian Name in Surpise Ceremony
November 19, 2012
By Glenda Baker Embry, Tribal Public Information Officer
In a surprise ceremony, Senator-elect Heidi Heitkamp was honored with an Indian name on Saturday, November 17, 2012 as she paid a “thank you” visit to the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation.  Mia a du gosh or woman who leads as she will now be known by tribal members was named by tribal elder Adam Tony Mandan.  At the conclusion of the ceremony, Mandan translated her name for her and wrote the spelling on a slip of paper.  He said it translates to woman who leads or Lead Woman in Hidatsa.  Following the ceremony, Heitkamp was besieged by the crowd holding campaign posters for her to autograph. She patiently signed each poster with her name Mia a du gosh and posed for pictures.
At the end of the visit, supporters of newly elected council representative Randy Phelan brought in a large wooden homemade sign that read, “Vote for Randy, Barack, Heidi”.
