Services Provided & Mission
The Tribal Health Insurance Program will help improve the quality of life of its members by promoting, protecting, and enhancing their health and well-being. By educating members of the current health changes across the country. Providing health care insurance to all uninsured MHA members on and off the reservation. And by helping MHA members to best meet their healthcare needs as an advocate and educator.

MHA Nation Tribal Health Insurance Eligibility
Tribal Health Insurance was originally created to help MHA Members get from one point of coverage to the other; without experiencing gaps in their coverage.
- If an Enrolled MHA Member is paying out of pocket for their (Enrolled MHA Member) Dependents, they should consult with the Tribal Health Insurance Benefits Specialists to assist in enrolling in Health Coverage before resorting to the MHA Sanford-Tribal Health Insurance Coverage.
- Dual coverage is only allowed for Transplant & Cancer Patients.
- REQUIRED – Apply for another Health Insurance. If denied, provide denial letter before approval for MHA Sanford-Tribal Health Insurance Coverage.
- REQUIRED – All individuals signing up for MHA Nation Tribal Health Insurance must be Enrolled Tribal Members of the Three Affiliated Tribes – Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara Nation.
- If the member currently has health insurance coverage, or able to obtain health insurance coverage the member does not meet requirements and are not eligible for Tribal Health Insurance. It is recommended the member should stay with their current coverage.

What are the Eligibility requirements to get on the Tribal Health Insurance?
- Must be an enrolled member of MHA Nation
- No other medical coverage
- Must provide proof that an alternative insurance (Medicaid) has denied medical coverage
Are there cost associated with Tribal Health Insurance?
- Yes this is a 80/20 plan
- Members do not pay a premium and may have 20% patient responsibility charges (Co-Pay & Co-Insurance)
- If your residency is on the reservation always notify Elbowoods Purchase & Referred care of any Emergent care or get a referral for care from Elbowoods
If I have medical coverage through work but cannot afford to pay for my enrolled spouse & children, Can I apply for Tribal Health Insurance?
- Yes if they satisfy the eligibility requirements
Can I get terminated off of the Tribal Health Insurance?
- Yes, if the Tribal Health Insurance department is notified of having other medical coverage
- Yes, for failure to comply with the policy & procedures of Sanford Health Plan or Tribal Health Insurance requests
- For termination of coverage, a letter is sent to members with reason

- “Summary of Benefits” gives the member the information of what is covered for Medical, Dental & Vision from each carrier
