Eligibility and voting process (basic overview)

Overview of eligibility and voting procedures for the Three Affiliated Tribes General Elections.

Eligibility to Run

  • Tribal membership requirement: Enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes.
  • Minimum age: 18 years or older on the date of the election.
  • Residency requirements: For Segment Representative positions, must reside within the segment on the Fort Berthold Reservation; non-residents may run for at-large positions such as Tribal Chairman.

Voting Eligibility

  • Who may vote: All enrolled members of the Three Affiliated Tribes aged 18+ on Election Day.
  • Registration / proof of residency rules: Residents must provide proof of physical residence (state/tribal ID, utility bill, lease, or other approved documentation).
First-time non-resident voters may choose a segment in which to vote; this choice binds future non-resident voting. Returning non-resident voters must vote in the segment where they previously voted.
  • College students: Vote in the segment where they have established legal residency.

How Voting Works

  • Segment vs. at-large voting: Tribal Chairman is an at-large position voted on by all qualified voters. Segment Representatives are voted on only by voters of that segment (subject to residency rules).
  • Proof of residency: Required before receiving a ballot, signing the poll book, or casting a vote.
  • Non-resident voting: First-time non-residents may vote in any segment; returning non-residents must vote in their previously chosen segment or for Chairman only if no prior segment vote exists.
  • Election questions / assistance: Contact the Tribal Election Board at (701) 627-8201 for clarification or assistance.

Election schedule
