Elections & Terms

The Election Ordinance of the Three Affiliated Tribes outlines the rules and procedures for Tribal elections, including voter eligibility, candidate eligibility, registration, polling places, absentee voting, election challenges, and certification of results.

Eligibility and voting process (basic overview)

Voter Eligibility

Enrolled members of the Three Affiliated Tribes who are 18 years of age or older on Election Day are eligible to vote. Eligible voters must register to become Qualified Voters.

Residency and Voting

Resident voters vote in the Segment where they physically reside. Proof of residency may include a valid Tribal or state ID, utility bill, lease/rental agreement, or other approved documentation.

Non-resident voters must return to the Reservation to vote and must be registered with a Segment before casting a ballot.

Candidate Eligibility

Candidates must be enrolled members, at least 18 years old, have at least ¼ Mandan, Hidatsa, and/or Arikara blood quantum, and meet the residency requirements for the office they are seeking.

Voting Hours

Voting hours for all Segments are from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Election Day.

Election schedule

Primary Elections are held on the Tuesday after the third Monday in September of every even-numbered year. General Elections are held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November of every even-numbered year.

Terms of Office

Tribal Business Council members serve elected terms as outlined in the Tribal Constitution and Election Ordinance. Some seats are staggered to help maintain continuity on the Council. The Tribal Chairman is elected at-large, while Segment Representatives are elected by qualified voters of their respective Segments.
